Chao Yuanfang was a physician to the Emperor of the Sui Dynasty 550- 630 A.D. In 609 A.D. an important officer Ma Shumou contracted a wind damp illness. He consulted Chao Yuanfang and was told "Wind entered your waist, the illness reside in your chest and to rid it you must eat tender lamb meat with medicine and you will be fine". The officer took note of what Chao Yuanfang told him and soon after his illness of wind damp was recovered. In 610 A.D. Chao Yuanfang was put in charge of compiling the Zhubing Yuanhou Zonglun (General Treatment on the Etiology an Symptoms of Diseases) which was used as a reference for centuries by physicians which categorize and describing diseases. His work was known to contained 50 scrolls.
