Ge Hong was the most famous alchemist of China. He
strongly believed in the ability to transform anything and everything
given the proper procedure.
Ge Hong also goes by the name of Wei Chuan is recognized as Bao Pu Zi
and is well known for his
research into Chinese medicine. Among Ge Hong's many
works, the most famous are "Jin Kui Yao Fang" which contain
100 scrolls and "Zhou Hou Jiu Zu Fang"
which contain 3 scrolls. Over the centuries many scrolls of "Jin Kui Yao Fang" are lost.
The scrolls on "Zhou Hou Jiu Zu Fang" provided valuable information
on the knowledge of transmission of disease
(notably the febrile disease). Ge Hong was credited to be the first to describe Tian Hua
and Huo Luan illnesses and their origins derived from food and drinks. Ge Hong
life long search for knowledge brought him across the country where he
learned from well known teacher
such as Zheng Yin whom taught him about alchemy while another teacher Bao Jian taught him medicine and
in appreciation he introduced his daughter Bao Gu to Bao Jian whom
became his
wife.
