Tao Hongjing also known as Tao Tongming was highly noted for his contribution in the reorganization of the "Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing"(earliest Chinese herbal materia medica). Based on his experience and knowledge, 365 new herbs were added to the materia medica making a total number of herbs to 730 which he then further divided the herbs into categories and qualities resulting in his compilation: "Ben Cao Jing Ji Zhu". This classic compilation later gave great influence to later generation. Reference on his work can be traced back to the earliest Tang dynasty herbal dictionary "Xin Xiu Ben Cao". Tao Hongjing set a new standard for Chinese medicine of future generations by quoting "One must research every idea carefully and not jump to conclusion because of hear say" being reason that rumor had it that birds evolved from worms. His investigation later reveal that the worms were brought into the nest by the parents to be stored and cultivated as food and upon hatching, the young chicks could feed upon them.
