Huang Di
黄帝, also known as Yellow Emperor,
was
born Gongsun Xuanyuan. He was known to have developed written characters
with a well known scholar known as Changjie and the implementation of
the characters leads to the growth of Chinese cultures and development.
He was also very keen to improve the health of his people and together with his imperial
court physician Qi Bao,
he studied
the art of healing and thus compiled the first edition of
The Yellow
Emperor's Medicine Classic. He dedicated his life to the
improvement and well being of his people thus by observing the stars, he created the calendar in
which a year has 4 seasons i.e.. spring, summer, autumn and
winter, which
also serve as a guide to the timing of planting, when and how to plough and
to harvest the
crops to achieve bumper harvest. Agriculture and livestock improved and
expanded under his administration and poverty and hardship was reduced to its
minimum. He also gave instruction to his wife, Leizu
荔 珠
to teach
the people about silk weaving so that they could use it as fabric for
clothing to keep warm during the cold month. He also taught his subject
how to build houses and irrigation canals and how to control flood water.
He encourages trading and business flourish as farmers benefited from
bumper harvest and crops, life stocks such as pigs, fowls, ducks were
used as barter trading, while the women trades in silks and
handcraft such as pottery and basket weaving. The mode of transaction
were in gold, silver and paper-money issued by the emperor. During his reign, the people enjoyed peace and prosperity and he lived
till an old age of 111. His
tomb lies in Huangling County 黃 陵 in Shaanxi
山 西
province of China.
